1. [BRIEF NEWS]
1). NMU Campus Celebrates 65th Anniversary During the last 2 weeks of
September,1999, NMU celebrated the 65th anniversary. ONMUAA faxed a
congratulation letter to the campus, and many alumni sent
congratulations, by email or fax, to the university, or different schools,
departments, groups, as well as faculty members.
The whole university gathered and had big celebrating
activities on 9/25/99. Some members of ONMUAA attended the
celebrations. Director Li Zhuhua in Foreign Affairs Office, mailed related
news (in Chinese) to ONMUAA. The news and some background info about
NMU are partially cited in the section of Information Exchange for your
reference (see below).
2). A Happy New Year Letter to ONMUAA from NMU NMU campus sent a happy
new year letter and best wishes with a greeting card to ONMUAA.
The original letter has been scanned and attached to
this issue of the newsletter. Just click the icon and open it under graphic
softwares.
3). ONMUAA Supports Alumnus Tong Ying Alumnus Tong Ying's
accident/injury attracted alumni's attention. To support his fight for
recovery and help his family to improve the situation, ONMUAA EC called
for donations and spiritual support for Tong. Many alumni sent emails,
cards/letters, or flowers to alumnus Tong or his family to express their
concerns and encouragement.
By December, ONMUAA has received donations of $270
from the following alumni(those who might send money or gifts directly
to Tong's family not listed here): Huang, Xupei Jin, Nin Gu, Rende Deng, Mei
Wang, Maomao Tao, Liang-feng
The money together with an ONMUAA letter has been
delivered to Tong's family before the Christmas. ONMUAA EC particularly
thanks these alumni for their donations, and appreciates other alumni's
support to Dr. Tong Ying.
4). EC Headed by WANG Fuhu (MD79) for New Millennium Alumnus WANG
Fuhu (MD79) is now the new president of ONMUAA Executive Committee for
the term of 2000. Congratulations, Fuhu! Wish you a very successful year
leading ONMUAA to a new level in new millennium.
The past president TAO Liangfeng would like to thank
all EC/Board members, Newsletter editors and contributors, and all alumni
for their support, understanding, encouragement, and participations. He
also thanks NMU/Foreign Affairs Office for their support.
During 1999, ONMUAA was involved in a lot of social
activities, such as welcoming Premier Zhu's visit, celebrating HongKong's
and Macau's return, supporting alumnus Tong Ying, and served for our
alumni and family by publishing newsletters or providing other
information through email.
We believe the work will be greatly improved this
year with Fuhu's leadership. If alumni have any new suggestions, please
address to Dr. Fuhu Wang at [email protected]
2. [An Open Note from New President WANG Fuhu]
Dear Alumni, Happy new year 2000! I am glad to take
this opportunity to say that I am sincerely grateful to serve our alumni,
even though one must be a little bit of a sucker to take a job like the
president of ONMUAA.
Still I am happy enough just to bear the title of the
Y2K president, mindful that incidentally the title sounds a little bit like a
bug.
Over the years I have put forward some effort to
serve our association in some small capacity and finding it immensely
rewarding, even if only modestly successful. As I move into a slightly
different position in our association, I hope to make some more concrete
contribution, while keeping my old hocus-pocus -- the webpage -- going.
As keepers of a reputable alumni association we have
serious business at hand. But we should remind ourselves that it is
supposed to be a fun, all-inclusive organization. If we burden such an
organization with rigid bureaucracy and formality, we may risk
suffocating it by loving and caring it too much. That, in my mind, is really
worse than making a lot of faux pas and having some fun along the way.
I really wish that I could make some grandiose
promises and keep them. But even I fool myself, I cannot fool everybody
else (The board is watching, remember?). Instead, I would say that I
intend to do the following:
One, make the pilgrimage to visit our Alma Mater as
soon as feasible;
Two, update the webpage more frequently;
Three, refuse any resignation of any current Executive
Committee officers;
Four, to show that I mean serious business, I will
shave my head and grow a mustache.

Cheers!
Fuhu Wang (MD79)
