1. [BRIEF NEWS]

1). ONMUAA Webpage

According to Fuhu Wang who has successfully managed our webpage, the current primary carrier(Danis) is no longer
supported any more. That means if our webpage breaks down, it will not be brought up. This is an urgent problem.
Fuhu has moved all the stuff to a new site (personal location again), and suggested to solve this problem asap through
a focused discussion by our alumni. Now the question is, Can we find some place that is willing to, or is able to, keep
our homepage??? Please participate in the discussion, and send your ideas or suggestions by email to
[email protected].
2). A Reminder: The 2nd "JIANGSU ZI YOU"(Friends of Jiangsu) Annual Convention for Overseas
Organizations/Associations

We published the following news in last issue of the Newsletter. Here we'd like to remind of the schedules to those
who are interested in attending the Convention.

ONMUAA has received an invitation from the government of Jiangsu province for this meeting. Last year, our alumni
Wei Qingyi and Yang Wei attended the great 1st Convention in Nanjing. This year's schedule is as follows:
Oct. 1, 1999------- Registration, in Nanjing.
Oct. 2-3, 1999----- Visit activities in Nanjing.
Oct. 3, 1999------- Leave Nanjing to visit other 10 cities for 5
days.

The government will be responsible for all expenses in visiting activities during the meeting(not for air ticket). Any
ONMUAA alumni who would like to attend this meeting are welcome and encouraged. Please contact YANG Wei for
details if you are interested.

3). Alumnus TONG Ying's situation

A couple months ago ONMUAA called our alumni to support Mr. Tong and his family. His health condition doesn't have
significant improvement recently, according to Xupei Huang. Mr. Tong is still in the nursing home and his family is
still struggling to support him. During last few months, ONMUAA received donations of less than $300 from a few of
our alumni. We will give them to Mr. Tong's family later. However, we hope more alumni come out to support so that
we can have more for his family. ONMUAA now calls again to our alumni, and encourages your support, either
spiritually or financially, to Mr. Tong. If you can donate some money, please send a check addressed to ONMUAA and
marked with "For Tong Ying" to ONMUAA special fund account:

Your concerns and generous donations will be great appreciated. We will summarize all alumni's support in next issue
of the Newsletter.
2. [ALUMNI IN SCIENCE]

1) Special Feature: Pei Liu (By LIU Youcheng and CHEN Jin, PH78)

Do you remember one of our movie stars in China, Xinyi Liu? If so, do you know he is an NMU alumnus? "Are you
kidding?" Of course, he is not. But here is our star, the rising science star, Pei Liu, PH78, who did graduate from NMU
and who does resemble Xinyi Liu.

Most of you may not know Pei's name, but when you meet him, you will find he is very familiar to you. In fact, Pei was
a very popular figure in public health (PH) classes. He was one of the class monitors. He was always enthusiastic, curious and conscientious about learning new knowledge. He was among the few top ones in academic performance in
Class 78. After graduation in 1983, Pei was selected to work in Xuzhou Medical College (XMC). After working for 3
years there, Pei was admitted to China Medical University at Shengyang for graduate study in Biostatistics. He
obtained his Master of Science degree in 1989. Pei then went back to work in XMC where he distinguished himself
professionally and made prominent achievements in sciences, particularly in Biostatistics and Epidemiology.

Pei's research focuses on the application of statistical methods to medical and public health researches, particularly
to the study design, data analysis and interpreting statistical results. The application of a right statistical method to
the study design is a critical and essential step that will allow a scientific approach to any animal, clinical or field
studies. Similarly the application of right statistical methods to data analysis and interpretation will make the
reported results valid and conclusions drawn correct. Here is an example of Pei's significant contributions to public
health sciences in general and biostatistics in particular. Starting from 1993, he has invented statistical methods and
developed theoretical basis for studies to screen the serum for antibodies to hepatitis C virus (HCV). Traditionally
each serum specimen has to be tested individually for positive antibodies. Pei devised a new screening strategy in
which several samples are pooled and tested collectively. When sero prevalence of HCV antibodies is very low, this
method will reduce the screening cost remarkably. He used the orthogonal design for the experiment to evaluate
different experiment conditions and cost reduced. He invented a statistical chart for analyzing the cost-benefit
quantitatively. This provided convenience and saved time and money for serum analysis without sacrificing the
accuracy of screening testing. Since 1993, he has evaluated various EIA tool kits for their efficiencies in screening
antibodies to HCV in pooled serum. For the past 16 years, Pei has made extensive achievements in other areas of
public health sciences as well. Using various statistical approaches, Pei has identified health effects of workers
exposed to chromic dust and co-effects of smoking and coal dust exposure on pulmonary function of coal workers. He
has successfully applied regression diagnostic tools to the analysis of various medical multivariate data. He
developed an early-stage diagnostic index for chromic fluorosisÖÖjust to name a few here.

Over the years, Pei was awarded more than 3 research grants from China where he served as a principle investigator
besides various projects where he served as a co-investigator. He published more than 12 papers in national and
international peer-reviewed journals where he was the first author. This gained him quite a few prizes in Outstanding
Science and Technology Advances from local and provincial governments. Recently, he was also awarded the National
Medical Circles Outstanding Figures Prize from China National Medical Circles in Beijing and won a scholarship from
Jiangsu Provincial Educational Commission. In addition, Pei has been playing a vital role in teaching and research
administration in XMC. He has been the Vice-Chair and Chair for the Department of Public Health in XMC since 1994 and
the Director of Study Design and Data Analysis Center in XMC since 1998.

This past February, Pei was invited by the University Vice-President to work at Department of Biostatistics and
Epidemiology, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada as a Visiting Professor. He is working on the statistic
issues related to various research projects such as Medical Diagnostic Imaging and the Canadian Health and Aging
Study where risk factors for dementia is being sought. We are very confident that with his dedication and rich
experiences, Pei will continue to distinguish himself here outside China as he did inside China and make further
contributions to our understanding of human disease etiologies and preventive measures.

Editors' Comments: As we stated in previous issues, over the years our alumni either back to China or overseas have
made various significant contributions to the furthering of science and technology in general and medicine and public
health in particular. We introduced Yongjian Liu (MD78) and Qingyi Wei (PH78) earlier who achieved excellence in
laboratory-based researches here in the States. This time, we introduced Pei Liu (PH78) for his achievements in China
with focus on public health research. We also welcome more features on our alumni in other areas of research in
future issues.

2). CHEN Jin, PH78, Joined FDA at Washington DC

Jin Chen, PhD, PH78, recently joined U.S. FDA at Washington DC as a Pharmacologist/Toxicologist in medical imaging

this exciting start in his career and wish him great success at FDA!

3. [INFORMATION EXCHANGE]

1) A letter from Tang Lijun (MD89) in Nanjing

Hi, everyone,
My name is Tang Lijun. I graduated from Nanjing Medical University in 1994. I am a radiologist in the First Affiliated
Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from then on. And now I am pursuing Master Degree in Nanyi. My majority is
Cardiac MRI research. I just want to contact with our Nanyi people overseas to see if I can cooperate with them in my
research areas. If someone is interested please write to me. E-mail: [email protected]
2) Y2K Compliant (Submitted by YANG Wei, PH 79)
You may think your PC is "Y2K" compliant, and some little tests may have actually affirmed that your hardware is
compliant, and you may even have a little company sticker affixed to your system saying "Y2K Compliant".but you'll be
surprised that Windows may still crash unless you do this simple exercise below. Easy fix but something Microsoft
seems to have missed in certifying their software as Y2K compliant.

Click on "START".
Click on "SETTINGS".
Double click on "Control Panel".
Double click on "Regional settings" icon (look for the little world globe), not the date and time icon.

"Click on the "Date" tab at the top of the page. (last tab on the top right) Where it says, "Short Date Sample", look and
see if it shows a "two digit" year format ("YY"). Unless you've previously changed it -- it will be set incorrectly with
just the two Y's. It needs to be four!

That's because Microsoft made the 2 digits setting the default setting for Windows 95, Windows 98 and NT.

This date format selected is the date that Windows feeds *ALL* application software and will not rollover into the
year 2000. It will roll over to the year 00. (*) Click on the button across from "Short Date Style" and select the
option that shows, "mm/dd/yyyy" or "m/d/yyyy". (Be sure your
selection has four y's showing, not just "mm/dd/yy).

Then click on "Apply".
Then click on "OK" at the botton.
Easy enough to fix. However, every "as distributed" installation of Windows worldwide is defaulted to fail Y2K
rollover... Pass this along to your PC buddies... this might be a welcome bit of information!
3) Earn Money While Surfing Internet (Submitted by CHEN Bei, PH 80)
Here is how it works:
You sign up with the company and agree to allow it to run a small banner ad on your screen every time you log on to the
Internet. AllAdvantage refreshes the banner, which they call a "viewbar," every few minutes via your online
connection. The company can tell how long you are logged on with the viewbar active on your screen. You get 50 cents
for each hour the viewbar is up. At present, with just a few advertisers signed up, the limit is $20 a month.

To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot and not try to understand her at all.
Married men live longer than single men, but married men are a lot more willing to die.
Any married man should forget his mistakes, there's no use in two people remembering the same thing.
Men wake up as good looking as they went to bed.
Women somehow deteriorate during the night.
A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.
A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, and she does.
A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.
There are 3 times when a man doesn't understand a woman--- before marriage and after marriage and every other day
of the week.

2). The Statue &;The Story (Submitted by XU Liqun, MD 81)

A man was looking around a small gift shop when he came across an amazingly ugly statue of a rat. As he was staring
at this statue, the shopkeeper came up to him and began to speak. "Sir, I couldn't help but notice your interest in the
statue. It's only five dollars, sir, but the story behind it will cost you fifty."

The man turned back around and looked in shock. "Let me get this straight. If I buy the statue and the story behind it,
I'll be paying fifty-five dollars. But if I can bear to live without the story, I'll only pay five? Sold!" He paid the
merchant and walked out of the store.

A few moments later, he noticed that a lone rat was following him. He shrugged, and ignored the rodent, hoping it
would leave. When he looked back again, some five minutes later, he saw that the number of rodents had grown to
maybe fifty rats. A little nervous, he turned back to his path and continued walking. When he looked around the third
time, he saw thousands of rats following him. Horribly frightened, the man rushed to a dock overlooking the ocean and
threw the statue as far out to sea as he possibly could. The rats followed the statue, sinking into the waves like
stones.

The man then rushed back to the shop, elated, panicked, and still in shock. When he burst through the door, the
shopkeeper gave a little chuckle. He had a smug grin on his face as he said, "I expect you've come back to buy the
story." The merchant held out his hand for the fifty dollars.

The customer looked confused for a second, then realized. "Hell no! I wanna know if you've got a statue of a lawyer or
Millionaire here!"
3). The Moral of Mankind (Submitted by SHI Jingda, PH 79)

God created the mule, and told him, "You will be mule, working constantly from dusk to dawn, carrying heavy loads on
you back. You will eat grass and lack intelligence. You will live for 50 years live for 50 years." The mule answered,
"To live like this for 50 years is too much. Please give me no more than 20." And it was so. Then God created the dog,
and told him, "You will hold vigilance over the dwellings of Man, to whom you will be his greatest companion. You will
eat his table scraps and live for 25 years." The dog responded, "Lord, to live 25 years as a dog like that is too much.
Please, no more than 10 years." And it was so. God then created the monkey, and told him, "You are monkey. You shall
swing from tree to tree, acting like an idiot. You will be funny and you shall live for 20 years." And the monkey
responded, "Lord, to live 20 years as the clown of the world is too much. Please, Lord, give me no more than 10 years."
And it was so. Finally, God created Man and told him, "You are Man, the only rational being that walks the earth. You
will use your intelligence to have mastery over the creatures of the world. You will dominate the earth and live for
20 years." And the man responded, "Lord, to be Man for only 20 years is too little. Please, Lord, give me the 20 years
the mule refused, the 15 years the dog refused, and the 10 years the monkey rejected." And it was so. And so God made
Man to live 20 years as a man, then marry and live 20 years like a mule working and carrying heavy loads on his back.
Then, he is to have children and live 15 years as a dog, guarding his house and eating the leftovers after they empty
the pantry; then, in his old age, to live 10 years as a monkey, acting like an idiot to amuse his grandchildren. And it is
so.
